** Will the thugs notice Sherlock?
THE SCROLL OF GREATNESS [part 10]
a Sherlock Hong story by Don Bosco
The streets got more and more crowded as we approached the river.
I lost sight of the man in the black cloak, not once but a few times.
Still, I kept moving, and eventually I would see him again, just in front of me.
We reached the bridge, and he slowed down.
Three thugs approached him eagerly. They had tattoos on their arms and ugly scars on their faces.
I stood across the street and pretended to be waiting for someone, but every now and then I would glance in their direction.
The man in the black cloak pointed at the basket in the wheelbarrow.
The three thugs lifted it and carried it down the steps to the river bank, where they placed it next to a whole row of similar baskets.
I could see the marks on the side of each basket. My father had a few of these in our storeroom at home. They contained black pepper, probably from Penang.
The man in the black cloak sneezed loudly. He pulled back his hood and rubbed his nose, then he quickly covered his head again.
But those few seconds were enough.
I recognised him!
