** Why are the thugs screaming?
THE SCROLL OF GREATNESS [part 12]
a Sherlock Hong story by Don Bosco
Dr. Woo was so startled that he removed his hood and turned to stare at me.
He recognised me, and sneered.
"Take care of that kid," he shouted over his shoulder. "Silence him!"
The thugs froze. They looked confused for a while, until Dr. Woo repeated his command.
Then they dropped the basket and, to my horror, grabbed some weapons from their cart.
One thug had a dagger, another a long stick, and the chief thug was armed with a whip.
They rushed across the street towards me.
I jumped off the crate and stumbled backwards. I couldn't decide whether to run or to try and face them.
But the thugs didn't give me a chance to do either. They grabbed me and dragged me to Dr. Woo.
I kicked and yelled.
"Hey, you bullies! Get — "
I was suddenly interrupted by one of the thugs. He began to gasp loudly, like he was in pain!
The other thug did the same too.
And then the chief thug joined in, just half a heartbeat later, with what sounded like a scream at first but quickly turned into a long and helpless groan.
The thugs released me and stumbled around blindly, almost running into one another.
I was baffled.
What in the name of Sang Nila Utama was going on?
