THE SCROLL OF GREATNESS
A Sherlock Hong Story
by Don Bosco
There was a sound just behind me. I turned around.
It was an old woman, dressed in simple Malay clothes.
She had appeared out of nowhere and she didn't seem to see me.
She reached out and ran her fingers gently all over the big yellow notice.
It was covered in elegant Chinese calligraphy, with a brush sketch of a long box at the bottom.
"Can you tell me what’s written here?" she said softly.
That was when I realised that she was blind.
"It's the Scroll of Greatness," I mumbled. "It was on display. But they're closed now."
"Oh!" the woman replied, with a slight nod.
There was a pause, and then she added, "Young man, is something wrong?"
"No," I said, even though I guessed she could sense the truth.
I turned and walked away.
Aisha promised me she would be here. And I believed her!
But maybe it was better that she didn't turn up.
I was still determined to see the Scroll.
