parenting | meet the head of the cheekiemonkies clan

Life is never boring when the Cheekiemonkies are around!
Featuring Kelvin, Sharon and their three adorable kids: (left to right) Ayd, Ale and Ash.

This week, we're featuring Kelvin Ang, who is best described as Singapore's Top Daddy Superblogger. He is an energetic family fan who runs a popular blog (Cheekiemonkie) that chronicles the amazing adventures he has with his kids.

Check it out for yourself, to see how his cute clan attended a Mixed Martial Arts class at Evolve MMA, tested project boxes from KinderHands, and also flew all the way to Sydney for a getaway during the school holidays.

No wonder Cheekiemonkie was one of The New Paper's 10 Most Popular Lifestyle Blogs this year!

Like all good dads, Kelvin actively helps his three kids (Ayd, Ash and Ale) enjoy reading. They have done a number of book reviews on their blog too, including this one where they talked about how they took some of our Super Cool Books titles to Sydney with them.

Here, Kelvin shares some insights on how he selects books for his kids, and also which Super Cool Books title they love best!

Can you guess which one it is? :-)

HOW DID YOU START BLOGGING?
Actually it was my wife who first started the blog back in 2005 when my eldest son was born, as a means to document the growing up years of our children. When she went back to work after her maternity leave ended, I took over the reins and have been chronicling my Fatherhood journey ever since then.

We wanted something where we could go back and read about all the wonderful experiences that we enjoyed together as a family... after all our kids have grown up and become independent. Truth is, I write my blog posts at night when all my kids have gone to bed, so it has become a somewhat therapeutic ritual for me, which I have not grown tired of.

HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR KIDS ENJOY READING?
My boys have not been voracious readers from young – partly due to me not being disciplined enough to read with them when they were younger. So for them, it is really a hit and miss affair when it comes to books. Books that pique their interest are the ones that they will finish on their own accord.

WHAT SORT OF BOOKS DO THEY LIKE?
They love nonsensical books like the Captain Underpants series, as well as anything to do with superheroes. Also, they are beginning to show a huge amount of interest in non-fiction books too, particularly books related to natural disasters.

WHAT SORT OF BOOKS WOULD YOU AND YOUR KIDS LIKE TO SEE MORE OF?
Books with a localized setting, so that kids will be able to better identify with some of the places that the stories describe.

HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN SUPER COOL BOOKS TO OTHER PARENTS?
Fantasy entertainment for kids, but in an Asian setting.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE SUPER COOL BOOKS TITLE SO FAR?
Both my boys love Ghostly, mainly because it deals with all things unknown. So that itself has got the boys hooked to the last page!
