Describe your style
Simple readers with a touch of nostalgia. My books introduce children aged 3-7 to old school nature games and contain brief scientific information and hands-on activities at the back.
How did you get started?
I wanted to capture the best memories of growing up with my mother and started writing when I had too much time during maternity leave!
Where do you get story ideas?
My mother inspired me to stop and smell the flowers, to appreciate the little things in life, while my character is based on interactions with my daughter and her experiences.
Pick one book of yours that kids should read
In Ixoras, Emma is fearful and inconfident at the start, but under her grandmother Popo’s guidance and with the help of nature, she finds her courage to overcome. Kids learn about the symbiotic relationship between bees and flowers and about pollination too!
Tip for parents, how to help kids enjoy reading
Use your best animated voice while reading to convey the characters’ personality and emotions. Have fun, enjoy reading and it will rub off on your child too.
Tip for aspiring kidlit writers
Seize the moments when you’re most inspired. Unfortunately for me it’s when I’m half dreaming while drifting off to sleep or in the wee hours of the night. Some sleep deprivation is necessary for your craft.
Your big wish for kidlit publishing next year (2020)?
Greater recognition of our local authors among Singaporeans. There’s so much we have to offer!
