FROM JANICE:

Hi! I'm Janice. Sing a Song of Hawker Food is my first book. This is how it all started.

Kidlit author Lianne Ong approached me with this fantastic idea of writing fractured nursery rhymes about Singapore hawker culture, which had been recognised by UNESCO. The 14 rhymes in our book are a celebration of Singapore hawker culture. I wanted children to see how special hawker culture is, and I wanted to entertain them at the same time.

Our book was written during the Covid-19 pandemic and we spent hours on Zoom identifying our favourite hawker dishes, and singing and fine-tuning what we wrote. Many nights, I'd end a call with Lianne wishing I could have roti prata or fishball mee for supper.

One highlight of this journey is hearing about children who sing our rhymes repeatedly, or who want to taste the food featured in our book. That's so rewarding.
